The Castle of Nipozzano is one of the historic estates owned by the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi family, who have been producing wine for over 700 years. The castle itself dates back to around the year 1000 and was historically a defensive stronghold. Today, it’s famous for being at the heart of prestigious wine production, particularly of Chianti Rufina DOCG wines.
Nearby, the Pomino area is another jewel, smaller but historically significant. Pomino sits higher than most Tuscan vineyards — up to 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) above sea level — which gives its wines a very distinct style: fresh, aromatic, and lighter-bodied compared to typical Tuscan reds.
Pomino also boasts an impressive winemaking history. In fact, in 1716, Pomino was included in the first official wine classification made by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, well before the concept of French AOC or Italian DOC. It’s also notable that in the mid-1800s, the Frescobaldi family pioneered planting international grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot here, inspired by French methods.
