Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia was part of the broader movement that gave birth to the phenomenon of the Super Tuscans — wines that broke traditional Italian regulations to produce bold, internationally styled red wines, often using Bordeaux grape varieties.

Today, Ornellaia is owned by the Frescobaldi family, one of Tuscany’s most historic and respected wine families, but it maintains its own distinct character and philosophy.

The property covers about 115 hectares (around 285 acres) of meticulously cultivated vineyards, divided into small parcels depending on soil composition, microclimate, and exposure. The soils are a mix of marine, alluvial, and volcanic origins, which contribute complexity and finesse to the wines.

Ornellaia is most famous for its flagship wine, also named Ornellaia — a luxurious Bordeaux-style blend typically composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The style is full-bodied, rich, and elegant, balancing power with refinement, and capable of long aging.
