Description

The Gallery occupies the first and second floors of a large building designed by Giorgio Vasari for Cosimo I de' Medici so as to accommodate the offices of the Florentine magistrates, hence the name uffizi, "offices". The construction was later continued by Alfonso Parigi and Bernardo Buontalenti.
It is famous worldwide for its outstanding collections of ancient sculptures and paintings (from the Middle Ages to the Modern period). The collections of paintings from the 14th-century and Renaissance period include some absolute masterpieces: Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Tiziano, Piero della Francesca, Beato Angelico, Filippo Lippi and many others.
