The Umbria Region:

The Umbria region borders the Tuscany region and is known for being the “Green Heart of Italy.” This is due to its landscape being hilly from the Umbrian Hills and having many medieval towns located within it. Each year there are a variety of festivals that represent various local cultures and traditions as well as food and wine events.

Perugia and Orvieto:

Perugia will be your first stop on the way from Florence to Rome. Perugia is considered “the Medieval Jewel.” When stopping in Perugia, there are a few main attractions to see including the Etruscan walls, the Gothic Perugia Cathedral, and Piazza IV Novembre. The historic center of the “Medieval Jewel” is located inside of the Etruscan walls. The Etruscan walls date back to the 3rd and 4th century BC. The Gothic Perugia Cathedral’s structure is of Gothic style and was built between 1300 and 1400. Piazza IV Novembre is considered to be one of the best squares in all of Italy. During the Middle Ages, this square was considered the heart of Perugia and at the time, all the main streets started off of this square. Perugia is known for its sophisticated history and is famous for its chocolate and jazz. Stopping here allows you to discover Perugia for an 1-hour before heading to Orvieto as the next stop.

Orvieto is the second stop on your journey to Rome. Orvieto is considered “the City on the Cliff.” Two must-sees when stopping in Orvieto are the Duomo di Orvieto and the St. Patrick’s Well. The Duomo di Orvieto began construction in 1290 and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary assumed into heaven. St. Patrick’s Well was requested in order to supply water to the city and construction was completed in 1527. The well is roughly 54 meters deep. The city is located on a volcanic cliff and it has dramatic views. The stop in Orvieto is roughly 1 hour and gives you time to explore and take pictures before heading to your final destination in Rome.
